Overview Of Kanchenjunga Trekking (24 Days)

Our Kanchenjunga trekking takes you on one of the most remote tours to the third-highest mountain in the world. Our special route offers you the opportunity to travel away from tourists for an authentic Nepal experience far off the beaten track. The long journey takes you to rarely visited villages and picturesque valleys and high plateaus of the Kanchenjunga region.

The mountain itself is situated in the eastern Himalayas at 8,586 m and is partly in Nepal and partly in India. It consists of five peaks: Main, Central, South, West, and Kangbachen. It is, for this reason, that it is popularly known as Five Treasures of Snow.

Of these five peaks, the main, central, and southern Mount Kanchenjunga are located on the border of Nepal and India. While the western Mount Kanchenjunga and Kangbachen are located in the Taplejung district of Nepal.

Kanchenjunga is also famous for its views of the Himalayas and its ice-trapped glaciers. Its landscapes of sharp rocks are always decorated with milky snow, while it is rich in forests, such as oaks, willows, birches, maples firs, etc. Additionally, it is home to several rare and endangered species, such as the snow leopard, sloth bear, and red panda.

The ethnic tribes of Rais, Tamangs, and Limbus inhabit the lower region while the Sherpas inhabit the higher region. The Rais, Limbus, and Tamangs are the Kirarntis who regard Kanchenjunga as a sacred mountain. The Sherpas follow the Tibetan Buddhism. They migrate to lower regions in winter but some remain to attend their herds of yaks and sheep.

Regarding our 24-day Kanchenjunga Trekking, we will visit two base camps of Kanchenjunga: first the North and then the South. We will go through the trek at a height where even the Sherpas live only in the summer. We will admire the legendary landscapes – in this corner of the Himalayas there are 16 peaks above 7000 m.

The Kanchenjunga trekking is therefore not just a hiking journey. It is the journey in search of truth and inspiration. It is an attempt to touch peaks so sublime that they exclude the very fact of human life next to them. Maybe there we will understand why the Himalayas are considered sacred. We go to places where only gods can live.

How does our journey begin?

Our Kanchenjunga trekking commences with a short panoramic flight to Bhadrapur and a drive to Ranipul via Taplejung. Then we progress to the North Base Camp hiking through the picturesque villages of Shekathum, Amjilosa, Gyabla, Ghunsa, Kambachen, and Lhonak.

Then, we will return to Ghunsa and cross the Sele Le, Sinion La Pass, Mirgin La Pass, and Sinelapcha La Pass and reach the south base camp. We will then return through a different route that will lead us to Bhadrapur via Yamphuding, Khebang, and Khamdime.

Essential Information

Best season

Autumn and spring are the two most favorable periods for Kanchenjunga trekking. During these seasons, the entire Kanchenjunga area is beautifully decorated.

Autumn (September to November), specifically, is the best season to travel to this area. The greenery of the forests is at the highest level, the flowers offer all their color and a pleasant smell along the path. Meanwhile, spring (March to May) provides spectacular scenes of the majestic mountains and landscape.

But in winter (December to February), the temperature can drop below -25 degrees Celsius at higher altitudes making it very difficult to climb. While, in summer (June to August), this area receives regular rains with negative temperatures in higher places, snowfall, plus you have to walk on routes that are muddy and slippery.

Elevation and distance

At an altitude of 8,586 m, the Kanchenjunga spans 220 km bordering India and Nepal. Initially, we will set foot on the North Base Camp at 5070m. and then on the South Base Camp at 4610m. When we are at the Northern base camp, we will be at the highest elevation of our entire trekking expedition.

To visit both the camps in a single trip, we need at least 21 days to complete. During this span, we will cover at least 15 to 25 km per day walking for 5 to 6 hours.

Maximum/Minimum walk per day

The 24-day Kanchenjunga trekking adventure includes 16 days of walking days demanding us to hike for 5 to 6 hours most of the days. We will hike through dense forests, cross several rivers, pass amazing waterfalls, and walk along the alpine terrains of loose stones and landslide-prone zones. Therefore, the walking duration each day varies.

The easiest and shortest walk will be on the fourth day when our trek begins from Ranipul to Shekathum. We will hike only for 2 to 3 hours on this day.

The toughest and longest walk will be on days 13 and 15 when we trek from North Base Camp to Ghunsa and cross the high Passes to reach Tseram respectively. We will walk for 7 hours on these days.

Difficulty and Acclimatization

The Kanchenjunga trek is the toughest trek in Nepal suitable for sophisticated travelers, experienced tourists, and those who appreciate authentic, off-the-beaten-path routes. However, the route to Kanchenjunga is quite well developed, the bridges are in order, and there are lodges along the entire route (including the Sele La crossing).

The main risk in this trekking is that of altitude. We will be above 3000 m for 10 days which can pose the risk of altitude sickness. But we have designed this program keeping in mind the gradual ascent and descent, and enough days for acclimatization first in Kathmandu, second in Ghunsa, and third in North Base Camp.

So our bodies will have adequate time to adapt to high altitude atmosphere eliminating the maximum possibility of acute mountain sickness.

Can a beginner trek to Kanchenjunga?

Absolutely not. We don’t recommend newbies to embark on Kanchenjunga trekking for their introduction to high-altitude trekking in Nepal. This is not a classic tour of Everest and Annapurna where you can enjoy the benefits of comfortable lodging with well marked and straightforward trail.

This is one of the tough treks in Nepal where you will walk on the off-beaten trail, lodge in basic accommodation, and spend most of the nights at an altitude of more than 3000 m.

In addition, we will be sheltering in tented camps surrounded by massive Himalayas, and chilly mountain air when we are at the base camps where weather can be unpredictable.

Preparation and training

It makes a lot of difference if you are in good shape and have some kilometers in your legs. But it is difficult to actually physically prepare for that hours-long climb up the mountain. However, there are some tips to properly prepare for your Kanchenjunga trekking.

How about beginning your trekking adventure first in your own hometown? Then you can undertake the Annapurna trek or Everest Trek as a starter. You can also exercise 2 months before by joining a gym and doing some squatting and treadmill routines.

Alternate Route

If the Kanchenjunga all-round trek is not your cup of tea, then you can choose to trek to only one base camp in Kanchenjunga. You can either hike to Northern Base Camp or South Base Camp which will be easier for you.

Reaching the southern base camp takes only 14 days and is relatively easy. From Taplejung, you will traverse via Lali Kharka, Pumphe Danda, Yamphuding, Torangdden to Tseram.

Whereas reaching Northern Base Camp needs 22 days traversing through the same initial route we have described above. After exploring the northern base camp, you can then return to Bhadrapur via Lhonak, Ghunsa, and Taplejung.

Altitude Sickness

We cannot ignore the risk of altitude sickness in this trek. Spending ten days at an altitude of more than 3500 m will probably make you feel nauseous. You may lose your appetite, find it hard to breathe, and struggle to sleep. You may suddenly feel intense headaches and dizziness.

In such case, inform our well-trained guide who after observing your symptoms may take you to a lower elevation. Or, give you Diamox or Ibuprofen to reduce these symptoms. In any case, you must increase your fluid and water intake, take the climb slowly, and use the rest day as instructed by the guide.

Transportation, Meals and Drink

Contact us for a trustful, comfortable, safe, and secure journey in Nepal. We intend to make your trip to this heavenly country easy and all-inclusive. Without needing to worry about controlling the daily budget, we include all your accommodation, transportation, and meal costs in our tour package.

We offer a comfortable private ride from the airport-hotel-airport. We will also organize your domestic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur/Taplejung and vice versa.

Regarding meals, everyday morning breakfast will be provided till your stay in Kathmandu. Full board meals including breakfast, lunch, and dinner are offered at the lodge during the trek.

The lodges offer a sufficient selection of dishes to suit every taste. Vegetarians, meat lovers, and healthy food lovers will easily find something for themselves. The food is not overly spicy, adapted for tourists, and filling. Here you can get acquainted with the national cuisine.

Communication, Gadgets charging, and Internet/wifi

Unlike other trek destinations in Nepal, uninterrupted communication service may not be available in this high-altitude trek to Kanchenjunga. In Kathmandu, you will have no problem with the internet and charging. But as you progress in your expedition, the mobile service may be limited. We advise you to buy NTC Sim rather than NCELL Sim as the latter may not have good coverage in remote villages. There will be satellite phones for urgent communication.

As for charging, please carry your own power banks and charge them whenever you get the opportunity in the lodges. We will be spending nights at Base Camps and they come in handy. In lodges, you won’t have much problem for charging your devices.

Regarding the internet, please forget about high-speed WIFI services in high-altitude villages. You can activate NTC internet packs but it is not guaranteed to have reliable connections. Please remember, Kanchenjunga has a lot to offer and this will be the perfect opportunity to detox your mind from the internet.

Permits

The procedure for issuing permits and their cots is also included in our service. But for your information, two permits are needed for Kanchenjunga Trekking namely Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project Entry Permit (KCAP) and Restricted Area Entry Permit (Rap) for Yamphuding.

What to Expect?

We are going for a wild and unique hike in the exceptional high mountain atmosphere of Kanchenjunga. Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, Tamang, and Tibetan villages are scattered along the route. We progress in a beautiful Himalayan atmosphere to the northern base camp and after having circumvented the camp with the breathtaking views of Mount Jannu, Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga, we discover the southern base camp.

The entire Kanchenjunga trekking means wanting to discover, far from the beaten track, one of the regions that offers many riches, both on a human and geographical level. This sporty trek is one of the most beautiful in the Himalayas in general, and in Nepal in particular.

Spotting the rare flora and fauna of Kanchenjunga is another great feature of this trip along with the opportunity to spend time in the chaotic Kathmandu City.

Absolutely. We seriously consider your safety as our main priority. Our well-trained and experienced local guides will accompany you and take care of you.
