Overview Of Everest Base Camp – Cho La Pass – Gokyo Lake (17 Days)

Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake trek via Cho La Pass is a more than special trip in the Sagarmatha region of Nepal. This is an all-in-one trip in which you will get to experience adventure, excitement, serenity, isolation, pure nature, and ancient culture.

Through our 17-days Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake trek via Cho La Pass, you will get to know the Everest region from deep within. The region is home to massive glaciers, alpine forests that are home to numerous wildlife, and the world’s top climbers: the Sherpas. They are considered the world’s bravest people who dwell in the mountains and assist thousands of tourists to fulfill their dreams.

Little influenced by Western culture, they are still able to keep intact their ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture. The colorful Mani Walls, Chortens, Monasteries, and prayer flags are their attractive emblems, which decorate several villages that we pass through on this trek.

On our Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake trek via Cho La Pass, we will first walk to Everest Base Camp and climb the Kala Patthar summit at 5545 m, which is the highest point of our trek. From this peak, we will have some unbelievable scenery of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Changtse, and many more.

Then we will head to cross one of the massive passes of Everest—the Cho La Pass, from where Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, and the entire Gokyo Valley are visible. The next adventure will take us to Emerald Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Village.

The Gokyo Lake is a chain of six serene glacier lakes nestled at an altitude of 4700 to 5000 m. The lake has significant religious importance for Hindu and Buddhist people of Nepal, for it is believed to be the holy abode of Snake God.

Approaching the Gokyo Ri the next day, we head down to Macchermo and Namche. This route enables us to complete this trek in 17 days with enough acclimatization days in between.

So don’t waste time! Get closer to the top of the world and live a totally different experience.

How does our journey start?

Our incredible expedition commences with a thrilling flight to Lukla, the starting center for the Everest Trek. Two days of the trek ahead will take us to Namche Bazaar, where we will spend a necessary acclimatization day. Then we advance to the charming villages of Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche. We are getting closer to our ultimate destination of Gorakshep, from where we head to the mythical Everest Base Camp. We then ascend the Kala Patthar summit for the unparalleled sunrise view over tall snowy peaks.

Heading to Dzong La, we cross the challenging Cho La Pass and move towards Thangnak. We then proceed to the captivating Gokyo village and trek to Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Ri. Retracing our steps back, we head to Macchermo, Namche, and Lukla.

The second good time is in spring, from mid-March to mid-May. You may see a few more clouds than in the fall, but you will be treated to nature in full bloom.

Summer is monsoon season in Nepal, and let’s just say you definitely won’t want to climb mountains covered in torrents of mud. From December to early March, the inhabitants of Gokyo go back down the valley to avoid the bitter cold of winter.

Elevation and Distance

We outset our journey to Everest Base Camp with the Gokyo Lake trek via Cho La Pass from Lukla, standing at 2860 m above sea level. The awe-inspiring Everest Base Camp is around 300 km away from Kathmandu city, which is erected at 5364 m.

The Gokyo village, whereas, is at a mere distance of 16.5 km from Everest Base Camp, with its hidden gem of Gokyo Lake perched at 4700 to 5000 m heights.

Approximately, we will complete the entire trek within 17 days consisting of 14 days of actual hiking. We will therefore be covering 15 to 20 km each day on average.

Maximum/Minimum walk per day

Our trek includes 14 days of hiking days when you will walk for 5 to 8 hours every day depending on altitude, terrain, pace, and the overnight village. That means, your hiking duration varies each day, sometimes pushing you to a full 7 to 8 hours and sometimes merely walking for 3 to 4 hours.

We will invest only 3 to 4 hours on day 3 when we begin our hike from Lukla to Phakding, which will be our minimum walk in the entire trekking period.

However, day 10 and day 11 will test our endurance when we set off to climb Kala Patthar and cross Cho La Pass to reach Thangnak from Dzong La.

On day 10, we will engage in walking for 6 to 7 hours, while the next day we will hike for 7 to 8 hours, which will be our maximum walk of the whole trekking period. These days are also counted as the major highlights and the toughest days of the whole trip.

Difficulty and Acclimatization

The effects of altitude peak on the second or third day. Therefore, a few days before and after arrival, it would be good to eat little and lightly, especially in the evening.
