If you have question about Annapurna Circuit Trek- 17 Days, please feel free to ask
The Annapurna Circuit trek is rightly called the classic tour of Nepal. It offers more variety than any other tour of a similar length, as it leads through virtually all of Nepal’s characteristic landscapes. There are magnificent views of Annapurna, Manaslu, and Dhaulagiri, and visitors are mesmerized by the amazing combination of vistas, from subtropical and alpine peaks to arid semi-deserts similar to Tibet.
The Annapurna mountain range located in the North central part of Nepal is named after a Hindu Goddess of Food- Annapurna. It consists of one peak named Annapurna I at an elevation of 8091 m, 13 summits over 7000 m, and 16 more peaks of more than 6000 m elevation.
The southern, monsoon-soaked green slopes of these Himalayas are connected by the deep gorge valleys of two large rivers, the Marshyangdi and the Kali Gandaki. Beyond the main Himalayan ridge is the barren, Buddhist countryside of the Tibetan plateau, with the special landscapes of Manang and Mustang.
Thus, with our Annapurna circuit trek, we will be able to see all these magical mountain ranges, visit Manang, and indulge in the spiritual atmosphere of Muktinath in Mustang. If we are lucky, we may also see Musk deer, snow leopards, red pandas, and Himalayan Black bears in the Annapurna Conservation Area.
Another highlight of our Annapurna Circuit Trek is crossing the iconic Thorong La pass (5,416m), which is also the biggest test of strength. Throughout our tour, we will stay in teahouses and meet many different ethnic groups of Nepal who are mainly Gurungs and Magars. They follow mainly Tibetan Buddhism and are the strong laborious farmers who reside in these high mountains.
On our 17-day Annapurna Circuit trek, we hike every day, which requires good endurance. Therefore, previous hiking experience does not hurt, so the continuous load does not cause problems, but you do not need mountaineering skills, since this is a trekking route.
Impressed! If yes, then join us to experience what it feels like to hike at the foot of the giants of the Himalayas, get a glimpse into the lives of the locals, and enjoy the trip of a lifetime.
The Annapurna circuit trek begins with the ancient monuments of the Kathmandu Valley, where we will immerse ourselves in its rhythm, sounds, and smells. Next – we move to Besisahar, and our route will continue through numerous forests, rivers, waterfalls, and villages, then – to the high mountain valley of Manang.
This part of the route is probably the most beautiful: on both sides are the high mountains of the Himalayas, covered with snow, on the left is the Annapurna range, and on the right is the Manaslu range.
Next, we climb the highest mountain Pass of Thorong La on the way from Manang to Muktinath. After a long transition, we descend to Muktinath, where we visit an ancient temple. Then we trek to Jomsom and drive to Tatopani and Pokhara.
01
Welcome, and Namaste! Our English-speaking guide will meet you at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and take you to the hotel. You can take a short rest and walk around the city and dine in a restaurant of traditional Nepali cuisine. In a short time, you will be able to enjoy the cuisine of different nationalities of Nepal and acquaint with the culture and customs.
02
Get ready for an exclusive sightseeing tour of the Kathmandu City. After you give your documents to our guide for obtaining the permits, of course, we will take a tour of the capital. We will look at Buddhist and Hindu temples, and stupas, breathe in the color, and calmly immerse ourselves in Nepal.
After the tour, we return to the hotel, we still need to rest before the road.
03
Today we leave the bustling Kathmandu early in the morning and drive through the valley of the Trishuli and then the Marsyangdi River in the early afternoon to the settlement of Besisahar.
After having lunch, we will resume our drive to reach the tiny village of Jagat, hidden in the shadow of the majestic mountain blocks of Manaslu and Annapurna. Here we will stay in a simple guest house, discuss the details of the tour ahead of us, and if time allows, take a leisurely walk around the area.
04
After an early morning invigorating breakfast, we will begin our trek to the Annapurna Circuit. We will climb the mountain trail along the winding course of the Marshyangdi River into the Tal Valley. Through bamboo groves and rhododendron forests, we will enter the Manang region. Climbing some stone stairs, we reach Dharapani- a typical Tibetan settlement where we will stay for the night.
05
The real adventure begins today. After breakfast, we leave for the village of Chame, the center of the Manang area. Up to this point, we are going on easy terrain, as a warm-up for the tours ahead. We move forward to Timang village and walk through the pine and rhododendron forests.
From here, we can enjoy the breathtaking panorama from countless places. If we are lucky and the weather is clear, we can even catch a glimpse of the peaks of Manaslu, Peak 29, and Annapurna II. Arriving in Chame, we will undoubtedly have the feeling that we have arrived in the Himalayas.
06
Leaving Chame, our path leads through a pine forest. Then we will cross a suspension bridge on the side of a narrow gorge and reach Paungi Danda. The meaning of the striking rock wall is the gate of Heaven.
We will now arrive at Dhukur Phokari where we will have our lunch. In the late afternoon, we reach the settlement of Upper Pisang, where we can go on a small acclimatization tour in the village, and visit the Buddhist monastery.
07
After breakfast, we will resume our walk and pass a small lake. Then we reach the ancient settlement of Ghyaru, with its old Buddhist monastery, and a magnificent panorama of the Annapurna range, Pisang Peak, and Chulu East and West.
From here we reach the fortified village of Ngawal from where we will descend steeply. The path next takes us to Bragha famous for its ancient Buddhist monastery. Soon we will be in Manang where we spend two nights as acclimatization day.
08
We will spend a full day in Manang to acclimatize before the high altitude days ahead, to acclimate our bodies to the high altitude and oxygen-poor environment.
However, today is not an idle day either: one of the most spectacular corners of the area is the bluish-green water of Gangpurna Lake, at the foot of the northern Gangapurna glacier, just half an hour’s walk from the village.
For those who want a little more of a challenge, we can also climb up to a nearby lookout point of Chongkor. In the framework of the free program in the afternoon, everyone can customize it to their own liking.
09
Leaving Manang, we slowly continue the ascent in the direction of Thorung Pass. Today, we climb approximately 600 meters, which means we are just over 4,000 meters before we reach our accommodation today, the village of Yak Kharka, which consists of a couple of guest houses. The name says it all: yes, there is a yak pasture in the area.
10
After breakfast, we descend into the valley, where we cross over to the other side of the Jarjung River, and then the path leads up again. We enjoy the breathtaking view of the Gundang, Syagang, and Khatungkan mountains on this stretch.
Today’s distance is the shortest, so we have time to look around and take pictures along the way. We arrive in Thorong Phedi in the early afternoon, where we spend the night. This will be the highest settlement where we spend the night.
11
It is the hardest and most spectacular day of our tour. Today we get up very early so that we can be at the highest point of the tour, the famous and infamous Thorung-La pass.
We slowly creep towards the pass. Arriving at the Thorung La pass, we are greeted by a multitude of prayer flags and remarkable views of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Annapurna I, Fishtail, Nilgiri, Lamjung Himal, and Hiunchuli.
Now, we start our descent on the other side, in the direction of Muktinath. Muktinath is one of the holiest places for Hindu pilgrims. If we still have energy, we will take a small walk in the village with a special atmosphere.
12
Today we continue our journey from Muktinath towards Kagbeni. However, after breakfast, we will leave to see the famous Hindu temple complex, Vishnu’s shrine, and the Holy Springs. After visiting the holy temple complex in Muktinath, we cross the village and walk through the fabulous landscape to reach Kagbeni.
Arriving in Kagbeni, we will see the monastery, walk in the village, and go to the Upper Mustang gate. Then we walk along the barren bed of the Kali Gandaki Valley and arrive in the center of the area, the city of Jomson, in the late afternoon.
13
Today we drive towards Tatopani. We will witness awesome landscapes that are sure to make anyone’s heart skip a beat. Tatopani offers a natural hot spring that is also beneficial for medicinal reasons. After we arrive, we relax and take a dip in the warm water. After the tours of the previous days, every bit of us deserves to be pampered. We also spend the night here.
14
After breakfast, we will drive to Pokhara along the road of Kali Gandaki River Valley. After about 6 hours of scenic drive, we will be at Pokhara in the afternoon. After checking in at the hotel, we can take a boat ride, relax in the great restaurants by the lake, or shop to our heart’s content in the bazaar. In the evening we immerse ourselves in the hustle and bustle of Pokhara’s night.
15
Early morning, we will drive to Kathmandu following the scenic path with the spectacular views of Annapurna and Fishtail. We will be in Kathmandu in the late afternoon then we can relax in our comfortable hotel rooms.
Attention: If you want to take a short flight to Kathmandu from Pokhara, we can arrange for your flight at an additional cost.
16
Our last day will not be uneventful either. Instead of lazing around in the hotel room, with the help of our tour guides, we will discover the Kathmandu Valley, which is the meeting point of the ancient civilizations of Asia, on a full-day sightseeing tour.
17
Last breakfast in Kathmandu, then departure to the airport. You can also extend your trip with Chitwan National Park or Ghorepani Poonhill trek.
The Annapurna circuit trek is the complete travel plan that allows you to see the massive Himalayan giants of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu. You will also see the beautiful sacred peak of Machhapuchhre in Pokhara. You will hike through the Annapurna Conservation area most of the time in your journey.
The park contains Tibetan temples and monasteries, mountain villages, the sacred cities of Mustang-Kagbeni and Muktinath, and the hot springs of Tatopani. And in the spring, the foothills are colored with thousands of blooming rhododendrons.
And in the landscapes of Manang and Lower Mustang, you will feel like you are in Tibet. The green poplar groves scattered in the barren landscape, small scattered settlements of whitewashed houses, Buddhist stupas, and monasteries await the hikers who come here.
You will then spend a day in Pokhara- a paradise with a charming atmosphere and vibrant culture. You will explore the monumental Kathmandu Valley and observe the intermingling of various cultures, customs, and traditions.
The most ideal periods for the Annapurna Circuit trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these periods, we can expect clear weather, with lots of sunshine, with temperatures around 22-27 degrees Celsius during the day and 15-20 degrees Celsius in the morning.
However, above 3,000 meters, temperatures can be 5-10 degrees Celsius with light frost in the morning. In the higher-lying Manang and Mustang regions, the temperature can be very high in sunny, windless weather, but in cloudy and strong winds, it can feel very cool.
In the Thorong La Pass and Muktinath area, there may even be snowdrifts or persistent snowfall. Around Manang and in the Kali Gandaki valley, strong winds are typical in the afternoon.
The Annapurna Circuit trek is 250 km long and it takes more than two weeks to cover the entire route. The highest settlement where we will spend the night is at Thorong Phedi at an elevation of 4600m above sea level. The highest altitude we will cross in our complete journey to the Annapurna is at Thorong la Pass elevated at 5416m above sea level.
We begin our hike from Jagat which lies at a distance of 150 km from Kathmandu. Our trek ends at Jomsom from where we will drive again to return to Kathmandu.
We have therefore 9 days of trekking days ahead of us when we will cover 15 km per day on an average.
During our Annapurna circuit trek, you should usually expect 6-7 hours of hiking per day, on developed but often undulating terrain, with quite a few steep ascents. However, the tenth day of our trek will be the easiest and shortest as it involves only 4 to 5 hours of walking as we traverse from Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi.
The challenging day will be on the eleventh day when we cross Thorong Phedi and descend to Muktinath. We will walk for 8 to 9 hours on this day which is the maximum walk of our Annapurna circuit trek.
The Annapurna circuit trek is not easy, but anyone can do it. It requires an average of 5 to 7 hours of hiking each day. To relieve most of your loads, we have hired skilled porters who will carry most of our equipment. We can entrust them with a maximum of 10-12 kg of our own equipment per person.
But the tour still requires good condition and endurance, due to the constant load, the high altitude, and possible bad weather conditions. You definitely have to prepare for this. In addition to being in good condition, a positive mental attitude and perseverance are extremely important.
Due to the difference in level, you have to expect a little heavier breathing above 3000 meters, but due to the gradual, slow ascent, this will probably be not a problem. The most difficult part of the tour is the crossing of the 5416 m high Thorong La pass, preceded by several acclimatization tours and shorter daily sections to thoroughly acclimatize.
Undoubtedly, general physical fitness is required for this trek, which can be compared to climbing the stairs to the 6th floor on foot. A necessary condition is moderate endurance, being on your feet all day. For people with joint problems, it is worth understanding that there can be long descents and ascents. Therefore, prepare yourself with jogging, running, and cycling. Walking up and down the stairs will also do the trick.
If you don’t want to follow the crowd of tourists and want to experience something different, there is another route to approach the Annapurna Circuit. The trail will lead you through some of the remotest and noncommercial villages of Nepal which are pretty rustic. You have to spend nights in tented camps.
If you are interested, you can follow this 14-day route that will take you through Ghalegaon, Bhujung, Ridge Camp, Joli Kharka, Thulo Tal, Phulu, Kori, Tasa Kharka, Sikles, Ghawchok, then back to Pokhara.
Or, combine the Lake Tilicho trek with the Annapurna Circuit trek, and what about combining the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek?
Altitude sickness is one of the risks you may encounter on the Annapurna Circuit trek. At an altitude of 5,000 meters, the oxygen content of the air is significantly lower, and there is a high chance that the symptoms of altitude sickness may appear even in healthy, well-trained people.
In the best case, only in the form of a mild headache, loss of appetite, and nausea. In rare cases, these can become serious during the tour, in which case the tour leader may decide that the person concerned must turn back with an escort or go down by helicopter for their own safety.
Of course, following the advice of the tour guides, you can maximize the chances of a successful tour by following some basic rules. You need to eat well and get enough sleep, try not to get sick, and be psychologically prepared for physical activity. Drink at least 3 liters of water and starting from altitudes of 3000-3500 meters, slowly gain altitude 400-600 meters per day, so that the body has time to get used to the lack of oxygen.
Accommodation, transportation, and meal costs are included in our service. Airport picks up and drop-off service is provided in private transportation (car, van, Hiace, or tourist bus). The same way of transport will be used for transfer from Kathmandu to Jagat, Jomsom to Tatopani to Pokhara to Kathmandu. At an additional fee, we can arrange or Kathmandu Pokhara flight.
Regarding meals, in Kathmandu and Pokhara, breakfast will be offered. During the walking tour, meals are provided three times a day at our current accommodation and in the teahouses lined up along the road.
We can choose dal bhat, which is boiled rice with lentil sauce and steamed vegetables, or Tibetan momo, which is boiled dumplings with some kind of filling. But around Muktinath, you can also try yak steak, or the Yak Burger at Yak Donald’s in Kagbeni.
The Annapurna region has been developing day by day thus increasing its infrastructure for comfortable lodge trekking. The region receives a constant supply of electricity and the rooms in the lodges have sockets for charging your devices.
For communication and internet access, you can buy a SIM card of NTC or NCELL in Kathmandu or Pokhara for reasonable money and be online almost all the time. Nepal has now a 4G service ad working on activating the 5G service.
WIFI is also available even in the most remote places, but sometimes due to high altitude, finding a signal can be a problem.
Crossing through the restricted area of Annapurna needs Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit. For the trekking part, you need a Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Permit. But you don’t have to worry about the permits! Obtaining the permits and their costs are our headache.
Q
You can, but you shouldn’t. The track is divided into sections according to the acclimatization rules. You stay in a specific village because this settlement falls within the permissible range of altitudes for day crossing. Speeding the ascent regime can lead to mountain sickness.
Q
They are positive and friendly. They always come to meet you and are happy to help.
Q
We strongly suggest no. Please use water purification tablets for safety. Water purity should not be taken lightly. Most likely, nothing will happen to you if you drink water from the spring, but the chances of catching the infection are still not zero.
Q
Absolutely! First Nepali people treat foreigners kindly. Second, our experienced team will be with you all the time. Still, you should not neglect basic safety rules. Do not shine with large sums of cash and expensive equipment, do not leave your belongings unattended, and always keep the most valuable things with you.
