Tamang Heritage Trails is one of the new and interesting destinations for many trekkers as it is off the normal path and there are fewer people going there. The Tamang Heritage Area is located about 30 km away north of Kathmandu. This trail is an attractive option for those who wish to explore the mountainous region and like to learn about the culture of the local people of Nepal.
Tamangs are the indigenous mountain tribes living in the higher elevation surrounding the Kathmandu Valley or in the high mountains of central Nepal. These people love to breathe the fresh air from the snowy mountains so the settlements are always at the highest elevations.
The ancestors of Tamagngs were actually traders who entered in this area and decided to settle there. But they couldn’t obtain citizenship from Nepal so they turned their ethnicity into Tamang. that’s why, they still follow the Buddhist religion influenced by Tibetan tradition.
They are traditionally farmers and before they used to survive only on millet, wheat, barley, and potatoes. Rice was supposed to be an important delicacy prepared only during festivals in the past, but now the knowledge and perception keep changing.
But their way of life still remains the same without much modern influence. Their daily activities include cattle breeding, agriculture, and trading with Kerung in Tibet. They also go to the forest to collect bamboo to make baskets and mats. They still wear ethnic outfits, have their own distinct language, and have unique colorful festivals and dances.
Through the Tamang Heritage Trail, you can enjoy the magnificent mountain views of Langtang Lirung, Langtang Kerung, Ganesh Himal and more Langtang Himalayan ranges. Being a low altitude and short trek, the Tamang Heritage trek is doable in any season from spring, autumn, winter, and summer. But if you ask for the best and most perfect time, we suggest you undertake this trek in spring from March to May and Autumn from September to November.
This trek is taken especially to experience the culture of Tamang, walk through the dense and mountainous region, and witness the magical unobstructed views of the Himalayas. The two seasons of spring and autumn compose the favorable weather conditions to obtain all the experience that we are seeking in this trek.
Our Tamang Heritage trail spans almost 53 km lying north of the bustling capital of Nepal. We will gain the highest elevation when we ascend the top of Tharuche View Point which stands tall at the impressive elevation of 3500 m above sea level.
Our exciting cultural journey begins from Ghatlang- a charming Tibetan Tamang village that lies approximately 67 km away from Kathmandu. Our 10-day itinerary of the Tamang Heritage Trail consists of 6 days of actual hiking days. So we will trek around 10 km each day immersing in the breathtaking panorama of the high mountains.
When setting out on our 10-day Tamang Heritage Trail, you should be ready to walk for approximately 4 to 6 hours every day depending on the village we intend to stay overnight as scheduled on our itinerary. However, unlike other high-altitude treks in Nepal, this trek is a low-altitude and short trek that consists of only 6 walking days in total.
In addition, we will be covering only 10 km walking along an easy and scenic trail. Therefore, the maximum we will be walking will be only 5 to 6 hours on days 3, 7, and 8.
The shortest hike in the entire trekking period is on day 5 when we ascend for only two hours to the summit of Tharuche viewpoint from Nagathali.
The Tamang Heritage Trail is a moderate trekking journey in the cultural hub of Nepal. The trek is only for 10 days and that leads you through some of the picturesque landscape of the country. The highest elevation gain on this trek will be on Tharuche viewpoint which is erected at 3500 m above sea level making this journey suitable for new trekkers and for those possessing basic physical fitness. With no requirement for any technical knowledge or skill, this trek is accessible to anyone regardless of age and abilities.
In addition, we have designed our itinerary considering the gradual climb and elevation gain each day. We will also spend an acclimatization day on the 5th day of the trek at Nagathali which we will utilize to climb the Tharuche Viewpoint.
Although this trek is relatively at low altitude, remember you still will be crossing more than 3000 m elevation and you will be hiking 5 to 6 hours for most of the days. So some mild physical preparation before participating in this trek is recommended.
For example, if you are a sedentary person, you can start jogging, walking, running, and cycling at least a month before your joining date. You can also join a gym and start exercising on a treadmill for your cardiovascular health.
Also, be prepared for the basic amenities along the route. The route to the Tamang Heritage Trail was recently developed and Tamang people in the mountains still follow the same lifestyle not much influenced by modernism. So the infrastructure is very basic. You should be able to give away comfort for a few days.
Tamang Heritage Trail offers several other options: you can merge the Gosaikunda Lake trek along or you can go for Langtang Valley Trek.
In case of incorporating the Gosaikunda trek with the Tamang Heritage trail, you can trek from Briddim to the Lama Hotel and continue towards Thulo Syabru and Gosaikunda.
When merging the Langtang Valley trek, you will trek from Briddim to Lama Hotel, and move further to Langtang Valley.
There is less likelihood of altitude sickness in our 10-day Tamang Heritage trail. However, we will be traversing an altitude of more than 2000 m above sea level in our trek period. At some point, we reach an elevation of more than 3000 m. Therefore, the occurrence of mild symptoms of headache, dizziness, slight difficulty in breathing, and loss of appetite is common.
In such cases, Diamox and Ibuprofen will help remove the symptoms. Hydrating your body by drinking lots of water and fluids, and taking your climb slowly will help prevent the sickness.

Communication, Gadgets charging, and Internet/wifi
Along the Tamang Heritage Trail, you will be able to communicate with NTC or NCELL mobile networks or via WIFI or mobile data networks. The NTC or NCELL networks do work properly in the area but the signal may be poor when we traverse to the View point and Nagathali.
The lodges also have WIFI connections for internet usage but the lodge owner may charge an additional fee. If the WIFI cost seems to be expensive for you, you can activate the internet data package of NCELL or NTC. Regarding charging your devices, the villages have 24 hour supply of electricity so you can charge your devices at the lodge again at an extra fee.
Tamang Heritage Trail is a cultural exploration where you will meet the Tamang people and enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Langtang Lirung, Langtang Kerung, Ganesh Himal, Paldor Peak, and many more.

We will walk through and spend nights in the genuine villages of Tamang people enjoying their hospitality. We will interact with them, learn their tradition, visit their attractive monasteries, and take part in their rituals.
We will also take a healing and rejuvenating bath in the natural thermal spring of Tatopani. In addition, we will gain the challenging experience of conquering the tall Nagathali Danda and Tharuche viewpoint. We will also take a small tour of the cultural heritage of the capital.
Our Tamang Heritage Trail passes through the restricted zone of Langtang National Park so we need a special National Park Permit that costs USD 30 for each person.
In addition, Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) is also needed so the government can keep track of your trail. This permit is worth USD 20 for each person.
You don’t need to worry about obtaining these permits. Our service includes processing for the permits and the cost is also included.
