Essential Information

Nepal Weather and best time to visit

Nepal’s climate is diverse due to large differences in altitude and terrain. Nepal enjoys winter, spring, summer and autumn.

In winter (December – February), temperatures in the valleys and lower altitudes range from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius, while at higher altitudes they can drop to as low as -15 degrees Celsius. In the Alpine zone, snowfall is frequent and the weather conditions are much more difficult.

Summer (June – August) in Nepal is the monsoon season, when heavy rainfall occurs, especially in the subtropical zone. The average temperature is 23 to 25 degrees Celsius and at higher altitudes 5 to 10 degrees Celsius. In summer, the roads may be muddy and difficult to navigate, and visibility in the mountains is significantly limited.

Spring is the best time for our Nepal Tour Package, the average temperature is from 16 to 23 degrees Celsius, and at higher altitudes from 0 to 5 degrees Celsius. Spring is also the time when blooming rhododendrons create beautiful, colorful views.

Autumn (September – November) is another perfect time to visit Nepal, especially for trekking enthusiasts. After the monsoons subside, the weather is much more stable, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius at lower altitudes and -5 to 5 degrees Celsius at higher altitudes. During the autumn season, you can enjoy clear skies and wonderful views of the Himalayas.

Time and Business Hours in Nepal

Nepal is situated in South Asia, in the central part of the Himalayas. The border countries in this case are China from the north and India from the south, east, and west. Its time zone is 5 hours 45 minutes ahead of GMT.

Government offices operate from 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, and Embassies and international organizations function from 9 am to 5 pm. Banks are open from 9 am to 3 pm and some may remain also on Saturdays till noon. They observe holidays on all public holidays. Generally, shops remain open from 9 am to 8 pm with a break on Saturdays.

Religion

The dominant religion in Nepal is Hinduism – its followers constitute as much as 81.3% of the entire population. The other beliefs we encounter in this country are Buddhism (9%), Islam (4.4%), Shamanistic religion Kiratist (3.1%), and Christianity (1.4%).

Currency, Credit Cards, and ATMs

The country’s currency is the Nepali rupee. If you need, you can change a little money upon arrival at the airport. Afterward, changing the necessary money at the exchange houses in the city center is cheaper than at the airport. There are banknotes of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 rupees, each of one color and all decorated with mountains, animals, or temples.

Regarding credit cards, you can bring them when traveling to Nepal, they are accepted in many hotels and restaurants. In Thamel, they will also accept it in most stores. Even so, it is advisable to always carry cash, especially outside the capital.

In very touristy places like Pokhara or Kathmandu, you can also withdraw money from ATMs, although they all charge a minimal commission. Banks are another option to get money, but it is usually a slow process in which they will also ask for your passport.

What to eat?

Typical Nepalese dishes are very similar to Indian ones. There is a lot of spice everywhere. It also has Chinese and Tibetan influences so there will be a lot of vegetables everywhere. Some of these dishes are Dal Bhat (national rice-based dish), Thenthuk (noodle soup), Tsampa (barley flour porridge), Momos (fried or steamed pasta bags filled with meat), and Thukpa (Tibetan soup with meat).

Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, and likely cities also have numerous restaurants that offer international cuisines from Continental, Italian, Spanish to many more.

Shopping and Bargaining in Nepal

Nepal is a good destination from which to return with beautiful memories. Its bronze craftsmanship offers travelers countless figures of gods, prayer wheels, and other decorative objects throughout the country.

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, the number of shops seems infinite and among them, you can find art galleries where painters show and sell their peculiar works along with other shops where you can buy the famous Buddhist mandalas. Another of the star purchases is mountain clothing: coats, gloves, hats, pashminas, etc.

Something to keep in mind when traveling to Nepal is that you will have to haggle whether you like it more or less. From the start, they will always give you a price, and it will depend on your skill or patience to get a more favorable price for you.

Offer low but not too low and walk away if you don’t like the price the seller is asking for. And remain firm and polite at the same time, after all, bargaining is the century-old tradition of Nepal.

Tipping when visiting Nepal

Tipping your service provider in the Nepal Tour Package is on your will. However, it is anticipated by the service providers for the hard work and effort they put in for your comfortable trip to the country.

You can tip your tour guide, hotel staff, and drivers who are the direct service providers in your trip to Nepal. Depending on your satisfaction level, you can tip them NPR 100 or more but generally, 10 % of overall trip expenses are paid as a tip.
