If you have question about Everest Three High Passes Trek- 19 Days, please feel free to ask
The Everest Three High Passes trek is the most challenging yet the most beautiful trek in the Everest region. It takes you through Sagarmatha National Park through different valleys and three rugged Passes of the Khumbu region: Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m) and Renjo La (5,360m).
In addition, you will touch the foot of the tallest mountain on the planet at the Everest Base Camp, conquer the Kalapatthar (Black stone), and feel Everest in its glory from your soul. You will also get to spend time in the pristine atmosphere of Gokyo village and its lakes. We remind you again the Everest Three High Passes Trek can be challenging and tiring but the beautiful scenery and unique culture packed into 19days will be one of the most rewarding long-distance trips you will ever take.
In terms of the rewards of this trek, you will see Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and many other snowy giants. You will pass the high Passes equally offering the most incredible views of mountains, valleys, rivers, and gorges. You will also have the option of climbing the Chhukung Ri at 5550 m when acclimatizing in the village.
You may catch sight of musk deer, snow leopard, grey langur, and Himalayan sheep wandering in the deep rhododendron and pine forest of the park. You will also meet the most amiable people on Earth- the Sherpas and observe their traditions, everyday life, language, and festivals. You will visit numerous oldest local monasteries along the way.
Additionally, we will approach the Everest Three High Passes Trek in counterclockwise direction crossing first the Kongma La, Cho La second, and Renjo La third. This way, we will have better and easier acclimatization. The route is relatively easier and circular that allows you to see diverse landscapes.
If you are up for the challenge, you can take the route from the west side but the trail can be steeper, with larger stages which is very noticeable with the altitude.
So are you ready for the most thrilling adventure of your life? Do you want to breathe in the purest Himalayan air? And are you tired of the classic Everest Base Camp Trek? Yes, then come and sign up for our Everest Three High Passes Trek. We will send you all the details about the trip.
Our journey begins with a flight to Lukla, then heading north, we will arrive at Namche Bazaar. From here, we will head to Tengboche, Dingboche, and Chhukung. Then we will climb and descend the first Kongama La.
We now move to step on the Everest Base Camp and ascend Kalapatthar. Then we walk towards Gokyo village crossing the Cho La Pass. We will then step out of Gokyo and climb the Renjo La. Then we end our journey at Lukla.
01
Welcome to the capital of Nepal, surrounded by mountains, the Kathmandu Valley. We will greet and welcome you in the airport and transfer you to our hotel in Kathmandu, where you can rest after your long flight.
Our guide will come to your hotel, introduce each other to all group members, and brief you about your three high passes trek.
In the evening, take a walk around the narrow alleys, visit the charming restaurants, and dine on incredible Nepali cuisine.
02
Today we will take a small plane to the Everest region and after just half an hour’s flight, we land at Lukla Airport. Here we will meet our porters and local guide, and after getting to know each other and having tea together, we will start the first stage of our tour.
Following the course of the Dudh Koshi River, we will head north and after an easy hike, we arrive in Phakding in the early afternoon, where we will spend the night in the guest house.
Attention: in case of high air traffic in spring and autumn, flight delays, or cancellations, we have to go to Ramechhap Airport from Kathmandu for a flight to Lukla, which is about 4 hours away.
03
Today, our path continues in the North in Dudh Koshi Valley. We will be at Jorsale and reach the border of the Sagarmatha National Park, where our permits will be checked. From here, we continue on an increasingly steep incline to Namche Bazaar.
On the way, at the confluence of the Bhote Koshi and Dudh Koshi Rivers, we will cross the suspension bridge and climb the long steep ridge. We are now at Namche Bazaar- the Sherpa Capital with Mount Everest teasing us from the distance.
04
Before the next ascent, it is very important to get our body used to the high altitude, lower air pressure, and rarer air. Therefore, today, we will see Everest in all its glory and drink tea at the Everest View high-altitude hotel.
Then we will descend to Namche, explore the village, and go to our lodge for dinner and rest.
05
From Namche, we will begin our trek high above the waters of the Dudh Koshi on an easy path with a relatively gentle ascent. We will have Ama Dablam and Mount Everest far at the distance. After passing Sanasa village, we descend to Phunki Tenga and climb steeply towards Tengboche Monastery.
Watch Thamserku, Kantega, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam unfolding in front of us.
06
Today we will first descend through beautiful rhododendron forests to the bridge over the Imja Khola. From here it is only a short walk to Pangboche.
Now the landscape changes significantly, becoming increasingly alpine. From here, our path rises gradually till we reach Dingboche.
07
The key to adapting to high altitudes is slow ascent, so we will spend some time in Dingboche and ascent to Chhukung slowly. We will hike for 4 hours to the Imja Khola Valley to Chhukung.
From here, we can enjoy the unique panorama of one of Nepal’s favorite trekking peaks, Island Peak (6189 meters), and to the south, Ama Dablam and Amphu Lapcha.
08
No early rises today. We get enough sleep, have breakfast, and only then go light to conquer a new height, Chhukung Ri 5550 m. The views from here are simply 360-degree cosmos.
We will take lots of photos and then head down to our lodge in the village and prepare for tomorrow’s crossing of the Kongma la pass.
09
Today, we will cross the first pass: the Kongma La Pass, 5550 m. The slope rises sharply and soon the path progresses through the scree. We soon see the prayer flags which mark the summit of the pass. Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam Makalu, and many others open up from the Pass.
A long descent toward the east awaits us as we go down to the Khumbu glacier. After crossing it, we will soon reach Lobuche our final destination for today.
10
From Lobuche, it’s time to stand at the foot of Everest. We will walk along the west side of Khumbu Glacier and reach Gorakshep where we will have our breakfast. Leaving our backpacks at the lodge of the village, we will now climb on a gentle slope to reach the Everest Base Camp.
After spending some time, we now return to our lodging at Gorakshep and prepare for the next day’s climb to Kalapatthar.
11
Rise early for we will have the unimaginably beautiful sight waiting for us. We will walk to the north of Gorakshep and climb for 2 hours to reach the summit of Kalapatthar. Watch the magical sunrise over Everest, Pumori, Lhotse, and Nuptse.
After some photographic session, we will descend to Gorakshep for a hot breakfast. We will now descend through the not-too-difficult and beautiful trail to rest at Dzong La.
12
Another spectacular day crossing the second pass: Chola La Pass, a snowy pass but which does not require crampons if everything is normal. The ascent to the Pass will take approximately 3 hours. Dazzle with the most spectacular view of the most beautiful mountain of Ama Dablam.
Now we will descend crossing the very long and wide Cho Oyu glacier to reach Thangnak which will be our overnight destination.
13
An easy walk today of only 2 to 3 hours. So no early rise today in the morning. After adequate rest and a hearty breakfast, we now walk along the Ngozumba glacier to reach Gokyo village.
After lunch, we will go for a walk to the Upper Lakes of Gokyo. The Gokyo area has the most beautiful views. The trail is not easy, over rocks and boulders. Our path runs past the fourth lake of Gokyo – Thonak Tsho to the fifth Ngozumba.
From here we will see Cho Oyu (8201 m) and Everest (8848 m) – from a new angle for us. From the fifth lake, Everest is visible from an unusual angle. If you have the strength and desire, then rising above the lake, you can see (and photograph) the southern wall of Everest. Very few people can boast of such shots of Everest.
14
In the darkness of the Himalayan night, at about 4 am, shining flashlights under our feet, we will hit the road. The climb is not technically difficult, but the 500m climb at an altitude is still a pleasure. But this pass is the easiest of all the previous ones.
From the Renjo Pass, you can see Everest, as always stunningly beautiful and majestic, and Lake Gokyo adds spice to the landscape and makes the picture surreal.
We will now descend to Lungden for well-earned rest.
15
From here on- descending and descending only till we reach Kathmandu. After about an hour of climbing down, we reach Marlung. The trail is now beautiful and easy where we may spot Himalayan Tahr. Soon, we are at Thame where we will check in the lodge. After lunch, we will explore its old monastery and learn the wisdom of monks.
16
From Thame, traversing through the villages of Samde, Thamu, Kisibook, and Phurte, we will arrive at Namche again. Check in the comfortable hotel, take a hot shower, share your journey through speedy WIFI, and explore the bustling market of Namche.
17
We go back down the big hill of Namche Bazaar and follow the Dudh Koshi to find Phakding. A final climb allows us to find Lukla where we will rest for the night.
18
Early morning, we fly to Lukla once again enjoying the beautiful scenery of surrounding mountains and green vegetation. In Kathmandu, we will return to our hotel and rest with a relaxing massage.
19
Last morning at liberty in Kathmandu. Opportunity to make last purchases, to continue the visit of the capital in freedom, or to rest. Then we transfer you to the Kathmandu airport.
Similar to other trekking seasons in Everest, you should start your Everest Three High Passes Trek in the Fall (September to November) and Spring (March to May). The post-monsoon period of Fall and pre-monsoon period of spring leave clear skies with little or no rain.
During the monsoon months (June to August), the drizzle makes visibility limited and the road becomes muddier. Meanwhile, the winter months of the year (December to February) will make the weather colder and harsher than ever.
But if you are a winter lover and can endure the cold of the Everest region, this is also a great time for you to experience fresh air and admire the snowy mountains. But keep in mind traveling in winter, you risk early snowfall and the closure of some passes, in addition to having shorter days.
In the classic trek route to Everest, you either visit the base camp, visit the Gokyo Lake, or climb Kalapatthar. But the Everest Three High Passes Trek can enable you to reach these places all at once. Additionally, you will also climb the three High Passes of Everest—the most impressive viewpoints of the Sagarmatha region.
The serenity of Gokyo, the peace of Everest, and other Himalayan giants, and the modest lifestyle of Sherpas will make you want to stay here for endless days. It is a place where everything in the world is sparse and completely lonely.
If you meet yourself here and then turn your eyes to look at the highest peak of Everest, you will feel like you can answer your long-standing concerns and questions. Just feel and capture the grandeur and beauty of the beginning with your body and mind, not with words.
Through this trek, you will pay the most sincere homage to the infinite and beautiful nature you encounter for the first time in your lives.
The 166-kilometer-long Everest Three High Passes Trek is one of the longest trekking routes in Nepal that takes you through some of the lonely sites of the Everest region. Approximately three weeks are needed to complete this trek with proper acclimatizing days.
From Namche, we will take the anticlockwise direction to approach Kongma La Pass at 5535 m first. This is the most difficult pass to cross. Then we will tackle the medium Cho La Pass at 5420 m. we will save the easiest Renjo la Pass at 5360 m for the last. We will also explore the base camp of Everest at 5364 m and Kalapatthar at 5545 m.
We have designed the travel program with gradual ascend and descend. The daily tour distance on average is 11 to 12 km with a walk of 6 to 8 hours per day. In addition to walking, we have enough time for sightseeing and rest.
We will walk for 16 days exactly during our 19-day Everest Three High Passes Trek. The hiking nature of each day varies with the changing landscape. During the initial phase when traversing from forest and thickets, the trail will be quite easier. But as the journey progresses, the landscape becomes more and more alpine and deserted.
Our easiest and simplest trek will be on the third day as we commence our hike from Lukla to Phakding, walking only for 3 hours. But when tackling the toughest Kongma La Pass on the tenth day, our walk will be challenging and longest, requiring almost 9 hours of hike.
The Everest Three High Passes Trek is the most difficult peak trekking journey among the treks around the Everest Base Camp area. But worry not as our expert team has designed this program to help you adapt well to the altitude and clearly feel the beauty of the legendary mountain range.
In order to get you acquainted with the Nepal atmosphere, we will not start the trek immediately. We will spend a day as rest after your arrival in Nepal. Then the second rest day will be at Chhukung to acclimatize well before departing to climb the Kongma La Pass.
In addition, the trail to the High Passes is very clearly defined. There are numerous tea houses scattered around where you can stay overnight and dine. You will constantly meet friendly Khumbu locals and fellow trekkers, making your trip easier.
Generally, we recommend experienced and seasoned trekkers undertake this trek. You will have to ascend and descend the three High Passes at an altitude of more than 5000 m. You will spend most of the time in high altitude, going up and down slopes or crossing valleys, and completing the set destination at the end of the day. Unlike other trekking routes, there are small branches that make it difficult for you to determine the right direction.
Therefore, if you are new to trekking or new to Nepal, we advise you not to jump in high altitude trekking. Instead, take on the Annapurna or Everest Base Camp trek first, gain experience, and then participate in this trek.
Everest Three High Passes Trek is one of the most challenging and demanding treks that require above-average physical and mental fitness. Unlike other treks in Nepal, only an active lifestyle is not sufficient for this trek.
We therefore suggest every traveler to practice sports or other training programs so they can deal with high altitude, and prevent altitude sickness as much as possible. Please prepare physical fitness by normal hiking, running, walking, or cycling a month before this trip. Or, go for a high- or medium-altitude hiking journey in your hometown.
The clockwise approach which takes you through some more high-altitude adventures, and some difficult terrain will be an alternate route for those who love to dare themselves. On this route, you will cross the easiest Pass Renjo La first. Then you head on to Gokyo village and cross the Cho La saving Kongma La- the toughest Pass for the last.
You will hike towards Everest Base Camp and Kalapatthar first before moving forward to cross the Kongma La Pass.
Trekking to Everest means a high-altitude trek that takes you to 5000 m or more altitude in the Khumbu region. The high altitude often causes persistent dry coughing, especially at night, which is common and named Khumbu Cough.
Along with cough, you may also feel headache, loss of sleep, appetite, fatigue, and dizziness, which are the signs of you suffering from altitude sickness.
Therefore, it is important to drink a lot, a lot of continuous liquid. It is ideal not to exceed 300-500 meters of elevation difference between one night and the next. It is not important to climb a lot as long as you lower the altitude afterward (in fact, it is ideal; try to do alternatives during the day that reach high and thus stimulate acclimatization).
We offer all land transportation via private car, van, or bus when picking up and dropping you off at the Kathmandu airport. We have also included Kathmandu to Lukla and Lukla to Kathmandu flights in our package.
We offer breakfast in Kathmandu and breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the Everest Three High Passes Trek. Meals at lodges are much richer than you think. You will have more options for your meals, including traditional meals Dal Bhat, momo, pizza, cake, pie, noodles, egg dishes, etc.
With the development of tourism, you can easily find WIFI when trekking in the Everest region. To be able to connect to social networking sites, you will have to buy a prepaid WiFi card from teahouses with a password to access the Everest Link wireless network. T
However, all local lodges do not always have these prepaid cards available. So you can also buy a DATA SIM card – NCell or NTC – from Kathmandu so you can get a mobile signal in many places.
Electricity is available to recharge your devices in high altitudes but the payment for the service can be higher with the increase in altitude.
Please keep in mind you may have to pay an additional USD 5 to USD 10 for these services which is not included in our service cost.
Only after obtaining the Sagarmatha National Park permit and Khumbu –Pasang Lamu village municipality permit, we will be able to undertake this trek. These permits are issued both in Kathmandu and in Lukla. But we will process these permits on the second day of your arrival in Kathmandu. The permit cost is included in our service cost.
Please keep this permit in your purse or shirt pocket, as they will be frequently checked at different checkpoints in the Khumbu region.
